What is it about?

Down-conversion, which consists in transforming a single high-energy photon into two lower energy ones, is one of the promising ways of improving solar cell efficiency. Photons from such systems will tend to be emitted in temporally-close pairs, yielding something known as bunched light, which is observed experimentally through correlation measurements. The article proposes a probability-based model allowing for a better understanding of the link between microscopic material properties, down-conversion mechanisms and the results of correlation experiments.

By concentrating on the example of down-conversion materials, which are highly relevant for future solar cell research, this work provides the basis for a more general framework for understanding light from a purely photonic point of view.
