What is it about?
Digital technologies will have an increasing positive impact on the integration of renewable Distributed Energy Resources, but this positive impact is constrained by the low energy density of distributed renewable energy, inadequate regulatory frameworks and the own (current) technical limitations of digitalization.

Why is it important?
Our review shows that there are significant barriers to the spread of distributed renewable resources in the energy system that cannot be overcome by using digital technologies. Our conclusions support the position that digital technologies will enable the development of a reasonable mix between decentralized and (also digital enabled) centralized renewable-based energy generation interconnected together with an engaged customer through smarter networks.
