What is it about?
The article describes the hardware and the software developed for controlling an atomic physics experiment. Digital, analog and radio-frequency outputs can be switched synchronously to a master clock with a resolution of 100 ns. All the software and the hardware designs are freely available to the reader

Why is it important?
Although many similar designs have been published not many of them are fully available to the reader. Also due to the rapid pace of electronics development, they become quickly obsolete. An open source project that can be easily modified will probably have a longer useful life.
