What is it about?

GeSn alloys with small band gaps have been synthesized by reactions of trigermane and stannane on Si substrates. The very small band gaps are achieved by increasing the Sn content up to 30%, and measured with spectroscopic ellipsometry

Perspectives

This work is potentially important because it demonstrates that group-IV alloys with band gaps in the mid-IR region of the spectrum are feasible, suggesting a possible alternative to III-V and II-VI compounds.
