What is it about?
Spintronics have the potential to greatly reduce energy consumption in computing. Here we show that high quality garnet films that are useful for spintronics can be grown on inexpensive quartz substrates. The performance of these materials is identical to single-crystal garnet materials, and the magnetic properties are easily controlled through choice of substrate.

Why is it important?
These findings open the possibility for integrating spintronic technologies into conventional electronic devices. Insulating spintronic films, like the garnet material used here, have the potential for very efficient and high speed operation as computer memory.
