What is it about?
The Himalayan region stores large amounts of snow that melt each year and feed major rivers supplying water to millions of people. This study examines how melting snow contributes to the flow of the Alaknanda River between 2015 and 2022. Using satellite images and computer models, the study estimates how much runoff is produced from melting snow. The highest daily river flow was found in July 2021, matching values reported in earlier research. These findings help improve our understanding of how snowmelt supports river systems in the Himalayas and why it is important for water resources in India.
