What is it about?

We Embedded an MSMA wire that changes it's magnetic field when subjected to stress in an RCC beam and then introduced a moving crack. The change in stress at different points on the wire helps us to identify the position and existence of the crack/damage.

Why is it important?

Magnetic Shape Memory Alloy(MSMA) is an alloy that's growing in different industries including and not limited to aerospace and biotech. It is a smart material which if studied right and optimized can be very beneficial in moving towards smarter structures. Today, structural health monitoring is the field that has the most scope of improvement and research so integrating the use of MSMA in it will surely go long ways.

Perspectives

I feel that this was a small step towards something bigger that's yet to come. Smart structures is the future and studying how a smart material can make a mundane crack detection so seamless was great.
