What is it about?
Enlightening the flow that develops in the stepped region of the airfoil provides a new perspective on the design of the aircraft. This paper examines effects of the 3D step modification on the aerodynamic performance of the airfoil and presents flow structures developing in the stepped region.

Why is it important?
The findings include 3D flow structures in the stepped region such as cavity-based induced flow, step-based induced flow, wavy shape reattachment line and wavy shape recirculation region. Also, the results shows the effects of these flow structures on aerodynamic performance of the airfoil.
Perspectives
While working on this paper, it was exciting to find different 3D flow structures with stepped geometry modification of the airfoil. I hope this paper contributes to aircraft design with a new perspective on flow structures.
