What is it about?

How to apply a spectral model to estimate the response of a highly tapered circular structure to vortex-shedding ? This paper will show that, proposing a model calibrated following an experimental campaign conducted in a wind tunnel through static and dynamic tests.

Why is it important?

There is a high degree of uncertainty concerning the effect of taper with regard to vortex-induced vibrations. This paper proposes a novel methodology to calibrate a spectral model based on experimental evidence. In particular, strong emphasis is given to the reproduction of the cellular nature of the vortex-shedding, an aerodynamic feature that is strongly reflected on the dynamic response of the structure.

Perspectives

I hope this article will point out the importance of using simple mathematical models to describe the response of structure to wind actions. In particular, I hope it can prove how the performance of these models may highly improve through experimental campaign, also for tapered structures.
