What is it about?

Nitrogen introduction to iron-based alloy is effective for increasing its strength, corrosion resistance and magnetic properties. This work, we have succeeded in nitrogen introduction to FeCo alloy with excellent magnetic material for the first time. This was previously thought impossible as Co addition to iron is inhibit nitrogen introduction. We have used ammonia gas nitriding method to introduce nitrogen into FeCo alloy.

Why is it important?

Our findings are expected to be applied to nitriding and surface hardening treatments for alloy systems where nitrogen introduction is difficult. In addition, they will greatly contribute to the improvement of mechanical and magnetic properties through the formation of nitrogen martensite in the iron-based alloy system.

Perspectives

We expect that this research will contribute to the realization of mechanical parts with excellent mechanical properties and the development of magnets and electrical steels with superior magnetic properties, which will lead to the creation of new high-strength mechanical parts that contribute to the design of power electronic devices and carbon neutrality.
