What is it about?

This research concerns the development of a simple, rapid and low-cost method for measuring the amount of desloratadine – a common allergy medication – in samples of pure drugs and pharmaceutical tablets. The idea in brief: The method involves mixing the drug with a blue dye (bromothymol blue), which produces a new yellow-coloured compound. The more desloratadine in the sample, the more intense the yellow colour becomes. Using a spectrophotometer (a colour intensity meter), we can accurately measure the intensity of this yellow colour to determine the exact amount of desloratadine in any sample.

The method has been successfully applied to two commercial types of tablets and has shown excellent results in terms of accuracy and efficiency compared to other more complex methods.

Perspectives

"From my personal point of view, the most beautiful thing about this work is that it proves that effective scientific solutions do not always have to be complex. My goal was to develop a method that any laboratory, even one with limited resources, could confidently implement to monitor the quality of common allergy medications. I am particularly proud that the method we developed using a simple colour-changing reaction has proven to be as reliable as more expensive and complex methods. I hope that this method will contribute to making quality testing easier and more widespread.
