What is it about?

Change your eye colour in real time, to suit your mood. Do you dream of eye-catching piercing blue eyes for a special event, of shining brightly at a dinner party, of green irises to match your evening wear? Bi-colour electrochromic contact lens that can change colour or opacity on demand, almost instantaneously, by a simple electrical command (RF remote control or smartphone). This can be helpful not only for aesthetic purposes or to filter light and protect you eye (like sunglasses but where only the varying density is placed in front of the pupil). It can also be used to trigger alarms in real time, in response to critical situations, for example as part of a smart health system.

Why is it important?

Eye protection to blue light exposure, which seriously increased in our environment since the arrival of light emitting diodes, in particular with the proliferation of digital devices rich in blue light is a main health care concern. At the opposite in the beauty industry, the undeniable impact of eye colour changes is witnessing a shift in societal norms and beauty standards and is of key importance, playing their part in breaking down barriers and improving for some persons their attractiveness and social role. They allow for a playfulness and fluidity in our appearances that challenge traditional, rigid beauty norms.

Perspectives

This work is susceptible of being exploited by the company Cylensee for different uses in health care and consumer domains. In an academic view point it enabled us to address new technological challenges in the development of advanced smart contact lenses.
