What is it about?

Since 2015, most countries have begun implementing plans for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) following the indicators adopted by the United Nations. Iraq has issued two voluntary reports (2019 and 2021),which review the values of sustainable development indicators at the national and local levels. The research aims to evaluate the achievement of SDGs in Iraq through a statistical analysis based on the published UN data for the year 2022.It investigates the 17 SDGs and their indicators in Iraq and compares them with the goals and indicators of the Arabian Maghreb States (AMS) and Arabian Gulf States (AGS). The results showed that the achievements of AMSs and AGSs were higher than Iraq in 82% and 65% of SDGs, respectively. When comparing based on indicators rather than goals, the results revealed that the performance of AMSs and AGSs was higher than Iraq's performance by 70% and 69% of indicators, respectively. Iraq has yet to perform any goal with major challenges in 10 goals and a low statistical performance index, the 8th worst index out of 163 states. Besides other measures, diversity of resources is strongly recommended as the key to resisting any urgent circumstances decelerating SDG achievement. More efforts are needed for human building and addressing the traces of many decades of wars, violence, and economic difficulties which throw their burdens on the most vulnerable people

Why is it important?

The importance of Iraq's commitment to improving the level of implementation of sustainable development goals was highlighted, as the research demonstrated its lag behind the Gulf countries and North African countries through studying the indicators adopted by the United Nations to measure the level of achievement for each of the goals associated with those goals.

Perspectives

From my point of view, the weakest performance was in the field of providing data and the accuracy of statistics that help in calculating the degree of performance on the way to achieving a target or goal of sustainable development. The indicator of statistical accuracy was very low compared to other countries in the world.
