What is it about?

This article tries to understand the scientific reason and process of violent storm sewer geysers. These geysers have been frequently observed in stormy weather where the water from the sewer tunnel erupts from the manhole. The eruptions can be violent and attain 50 to 60 ft height. Our research article discusses the violent eruptions through experimental investigation on a large-scale model similar to the tunnel geometry. The study identifies the critical parameters such as air pocket size that may result in violent eruptions.

Why is it important?

This is the first time violent eruptions have been produced in fairly large-scale experiments using smaller relative air volumes. The experimental data for violent eruptions helps researchers to identify the key physics to be a model for simulating this problem. The higher confidence in geyser modeling can help engineers design a retrofit to suppress this violent eruption.
