What is it about?
Titanium dioxide widely use for pigment industries. One of the way to produce titanium dioxide is by hydrometallurgical process. There are 3 steps for titanium dioxide production: leaching, solvent extraction, and precipitation. In this experiment, we conducted the second steps: solvent extraction. The process is to separate titanium (aq) and iron (aq) in acid solution by using chemical agent.

Why is it important?
Ilmenite supplies about 90% of the world demand for titanium minerals, mainly to make titanium dioxide for the pigment industry. In fact, Indonesia has abundant resources of Ilmenite. However, there is no plant or smelter that can produce titanium dioxide and the pigment industry still import the titanium dioxide from another country. Therefore lab experiment is necessary to get the best condition to produce titanium dioxide in Indonesia.
