What is it about?
In traditional electronics, bits of information, i.e. 0s and 1s can be encoded by the absence and presence of an electronic charge, which needs the physical movement of electrons. Devices based on this technology consume large power and produce Joule heating. Spintronics is an emerging field in which researchers came up with a way, where spin degree of freedom (DoF) of the electron is exploited to encode and process the information, without the physical movement of electrons, which leads to the realization of the spintronic devices with fast processing speed that consume much less power.

Why is it important?
To make spintronic devices, we need materials that are stable and can show high spin polarization at room temperature. Half-metallic material is a class of materials, which can ideally show 100 % spin polarization due to their unique electronic structures. Scientists predicted many materials to be half-metallic, however getting a real material is challenging due to their non-stability or disorder in their atomic arrangement (killing their half-metallic property). Therefore there are very few half-metallic materials in reality. In this study, we obtained a new material, CoFeRuSn, which can be promising for spintronic applications.
