What is it about?

If the frequency combs emitted by quantum cascade lasers are re-injected into the laser cavity, in some conditions this allows to vary the spacing of these combs. Furthermore, starting from a single mode emission, the presence of optical feedback can trigger these frequency combs, both fundamental and harmonic.

Why is it important?

- New physical phenomena are theoretically predicted. - The use of optical feedback to control the comb emission is more simple to implement than optical and radiofrequency injection. - This work shows that it is possible to extend the comb region in terms of bias current by exploiting the feedback.

Perspectives

Applications in imaging, sensing, free space communication are the main perspectives. Potentially, novel tunable comb sources could be designed by exploiting the new phenomena presented in this work.
