What is it about?

Oxygen ions are removed from CoFe2O4 nanopillars by applying a voltage across the material. This increases the magnetic properties of the material (magneto-ionics). The tunable magnetic properties can be used for magnetic memory and neuromorphic applications. These systems are also very energy efficient as they do not require a constant current flow to maintain the magnetic state.

Why is it important?

Our magneto-ionic system consists of single crystalline CoFe2O4 nanopillars that are more durable than typical polycrystalline magneto-ionic materials. We achieved high cyclability in this device (<2,000 cycles) which is superior to other systems. We also see fast, reversible switching in the nanopillars with multilevel magnetic states, and have demonstrated their neuromorphic capabilities.

Perspectives

Writing this article with collaborators who are equally as excited for the future of magneto-ionics as I am, was a pleasure. This work shows that we can improve the endurance of magneto-ionic systems by using crystalline materials, which is the next step towards practical devices. Voltage control of magnetism is a promising non-volatile and energy-efficient method of storing data. I am glad to be a part of the advancing technology!
