What is it about?
Oxygen ions are removed from CoFe2O4 nanopillars by applying a voltage across the material. This increases the magnetic properties of the material (magneto-ionics). The tunable magnetic properties can be used for magnetic memory and neuromorphic applications. These systems are also very energy efficient as they do not require a constant current flow to maintain the magnetic state.

Why is it important?
Our magneto-ionic system consists of single crystalline CoFe2O4 nanopillars that are more durable than typical polycrystalline magneto-ionic materials. We achieved high cyclability in this device (<2,000 cycles) which is superior to other systems. We also see fast, reversible switching in the nanopillars with multilevel magnetic states, and have demonstrated their neuromorphic capabilities.
