What is it about?

Trapped atomic ions are have been one of the most prominent platforms for atomic clocks and prototype quantum computers. We have come up with an improved method to fabricate electrodes for such traps. Our technique improves the yield manifold over previously known techniques.

Why is it important?

Trapped ion quantum information is at the early stage of technological development. There are no off the shelf ion traps that researchers can buy. A large chunk of a researcher's time goes into setting up the apparatus and fabrication of the trap is among the time consuming ones. This work reduced the setup time for a research lab so that valuable time and resources can be spent on quantum information processing research and not on building the apparatus.
