What is it about?
Ecosystem services (ES) and research in landscape architecture (LA) have gained interest as the importance of landscape sustainability has grown. LA involves designing, planning, and managing outdoor spaces. ES encompasses the benefits that we obtain from ecosystems. Despite their importance, there are few reviews of the available literature on these topics. This paper studies the relationship between ES and LA. It aims to understand how these two fields connect and what research has been done on the subject. The authors reviewed over 5,600 research papers published between 2000 and 2020. Most of the studies were from North America, Europe, and East Asia. The majority of the studies focused on natural sciences. The review highlights key topics, important keywords, and developing areas of research.

Why is it important?
LA and ES can help us design and manage landscapes in a way that benefits both nature and human well-being. This study identifies research hotspots and emerging areas to guide future works in land use planning. This can lead to biodiversity conservation and sustainable landscape design. The study proposes some areas for future research, like integrating ES with biodiversity and using new technologies for landscape management. These efforts can help us in making landscapes that are attractive and environmentally and economically sustainable as well. KEY TAKEAWAY: The connection between LA and ES can help to enhance the design of outdoor spaces. Research in these fields has been growing since 2005. But most of the research has focused on natural sciences. There is a need to incorporate social aspects such as aesthetics and culture in landscape planning. Future research on ES and LA should focus on this multidisciplinary approach for a more comprehensive outcome. This research relates to the following Sustainable Development Goals: • SDG 15 - Life on Land • SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities • SDG 13 - Climate Action • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production • SDG 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
