What is it about?

A procedure was devised to accurately recreate highway guardrails in three dimensions (3D), fitting two types of guardrails onto the curve roadsides, thus creating a reliable 3D virtual highway model. The available sight distance was compared to the required stopping sight distance.

Why is it important?

Although highway guardrails protect vehicle occupants from road departure, they may reduce significantly the available sight distance. Both effects need to be assessed together to decide which guardrail model to install.

Perspectives

Highway design engineers may benefit from the procedure proposed.
