What is it about?

This paper discusses the determination of active earth pressure coefficients under seismic conditions without assuming any rupture mechanism prior to the analysis

Why is it important?

Design of any retaining structure demands the knowledge of earth pressure. It is also crucial that the structures need to be earthquake resistant. While determining the earth pressure, several classical theories assumed a failure wedge before the analysis. The present study uses the method of stress characteristics in the solution procedure which captures the actual failure wedge.
