What is it about?
Should startup firms rapidly export their products to institutionally distant destinations? Based on data of international new ventures (INVs) from China during 2000–2009, we found the INVs benefit from rapidly, upwardly exporting to countries with higher trade freedom, but they suffer from rapidly, downwardly exporting to less open countries. We found the subnational market liberalization in the home country has a significant enabling effect in both upward and downward directions of rapid exporting.
