Why is it important?
Most traditional psychoanalytic theory follows Freud in placing great emphasis on the vertical axis between parents and children. Mitchell's theory restores to importance the so- called Lateral Axis which operates at the level of sibling relationships. This theory has the potential to throw light on some of the problems of contemporary society, such as sexualised violence.
