What is it about?

This is the first in a series of reports that highlights the novel assay we developed, showing detection of group B streptococcus in a significantly reduced amount of time.

Why is it important?

This test shows that with a brief incubation period (6-hours), the sensitivity of the assay is increased, rivaling that of culture and PCR.

Perspectives

This paper was our first in a series involving the immunoassay that we developed. Since this paper, we have increased the performance of the test, and have increased its applicability so that other pathogens may be detected. In addition to group B streptococcus, N. gonorrhea and vancomycin-resistant enterococcus may all be detected in a greatly reduced timeframe. Most importantly, this is the only test that allows for simultaneous identification of a pathogen and determination of its antimicrobial susceptibility.
