What is it about?
Lung isolation facilitates surgery within the chest especially video imaged thorascopic surgery. This paper reviews the historical context to present day practice and outlines the two main approaches to lung isolation that is the use of bronchial blockers and double-lumen endobronchial tubes.

Lung isolation is an essential technique for thoracic surgery and the anaestheisologists have to have a sound understanding of how best it may be obtained.
Perspectives
This was a collaborative paper that I conceived to give trainee anaesthesiologists the opportunity to gain experience writing a review addressing an important practical, for publication.
