What is it about?

A novel high frequency, high efficiency non-isolated HB LLC resonant converter with automatic resonant frequency adjustment ability and a circulating current suppression auxiliary circuit is reported. The output voltage of converter is controlled using a hybrid modulation technique based on frequency modulation (FM) and pulse width modulation (PWM). All the main switches and the auxiliary switch are turned on with soft-switching optimizing the converter efficiency.

Why is it important?

At the nominal operating point, all the excellent attributes of a conventional LLC converter are retained and FM is employed to regulate the output voltage. However, when the input voltage decreased to a level that LLC output voltage cannot be maintained with FM, the primary switches will operate at the minimum switching frequency and the auxiliary switch will be turned ON with PWM. In comparison with auxiliary switch based conventional resonant converter, all the primary switch and the auxiliary of the proposed converter are turned on with soft-witching Experimental results are presented on a 60 W prototype and a peak efficiency of 97% is observed.
