What is it about?
Radio tracking of suitcases can be a valuable asset for luggage handling operators. Traditional bar-code reading systems require close contact. This is not appropriate for continuous item tracking as required for instance to route luggage in complex conveyor-belt systems. Impulse radio technology (UWB) is attractive for this application, as a potentially low cost solution. An appropriate UWB antenna configuration is investigated in this paper to be embedded in the suitcase wall. The antenna is designed to conform to the suitcase shape, and its performance for real time tracking is tested successfully with different suitcase fillings.
