What is it about?

In this paper, considering the handling difficulties and high degree of danger for large buses making complex maneuvers, the nonlinear lane-changing behaviors on highways have been studied with a verified 4DOF mechanical model based on a test experiment.

Why is it important?

Lane changing is a common driving behavior on highways, but high speeds and large-scale continuous steering can easily cause stability losses, such as sideslips and rollovers, for large buses. Therefore, nonlinear analysis of large buses’ lane changing on highways has important practical significance in the vehicle dynamics research field and provides a valuable reference for active safety design.

Perspectives

This work deals with the nonlinear dynamics of large buses changing lanes on highways, which is a highly relevant real-life situation. In order to master the essence of stability and instability mechanism of large bus changing lanes at high speed, Rough-Hurwitz stability criterion is developed to analysis vehicle transient stability, and the vehicle bifurcation characteristics under steady and transient steering as well as steer returning with disturbance are studied based on nonlinear theory.
