What is it about?
A fault location identification method for power distribution system is presented and validated using a digital real-time simulator (DRTS). The method can accurately identify the fault location (FL) in a distribution network in the presence of photovoltaics.

Why is it important?
Lack of metering points in a typical distribution network presents a big challenge for fault locating methods. Therefore, a technique based on state estimation (SE) optimization procedure is presented for an optimum number of PMUs to overcome the scarcity of metering points. Moreover, communication architecture is also presented.
