What is it about?
Microgrids development in power systems faces financial and regulatory challenges. In this paper a systematic approach is introduced to help researchers find and understand the current deficiencies in microgrid financial flow. Conceptual business models to investigate microgrids as business models are introduced and discussed.

Why is it important?
Microgrids are the core building blocks of the future power networks. The expected security, reliability, flexibility and resiliency indices of the smart future power networks can't be achieved if a grid scale microgrid penetration is not achieved. In this paper the deficiencies of achieving a grid scale microgrid from a financial point of view is evaluated and discussed.
