What is it about?

One of the present methods of generating electric power on aircrafts is through the use of on-board generators powered by aircraft engines. However, using such on-board generators is not preferable when the aircraft is on the ground because of fuel consumption and acoustic noise caused when the power is generated by aircraft engines. This paper proposes a new three-phase dual-rotor middle-stator brushless flux switching generator (FSG) for 400 Hz aircraft ground power units.

Why is it important?

For the proposed machine, both field and armature windings are hosted in the stator in order to fulfils brushless structure. Moreover, both windings have non-overlapping concentrated windings to shorten the end-windings and reduce the copper losses. In the meantime, the rotor has no active parts which means that the machine is suitable for high speed operation.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great pleasure for me and my co-authors. I believe that this design will improve aircraft power generation in the future. I hope you find this article interesting.
