A Review of Research on How Developmental Language Disorder Affects Writing

What is it about?

This paper reviews 31 years of research studies and provides a summary of what we know now about how developmental language disorder affects writing skills in children, adolescents, and adults. We found enough information to show that children and adolescents with developmental language disorder might have difficulty with spelling, grammar, and sentence structure in their writing. There is not enough information about how developmental language disorder affects writing for adults. We also found several limitations to previous research and gaps in our understanding of how developmental language disorder affects writing. There is not enough research on typed writing for us to understand how people with language difficulties write using the computer.

Why is it important?

This review shows that there are several gaps in our knowledge and understanding of how developmental language disorder affects writing. We hope that this paper will help researchers identify how they might change the ways they study writing in this population. We also believe that this paper will be useful for speech-language pathologists who work with individuals who have difficulty with writing.
