What is it about?
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) see language sample analysis as the gold standard of language assessment. This is especially true in multilingual contexts. Clinically speaking they are, however, uncertain about the length of a language sample that is representative of a child’s language skills. The study provides guidelines on length of sample as well as a preliminary description of the spoken language skills of typically developing Afrikaans-speaking children.

Why is it important?
This study found that with targeted elicitation strategies a 30 minute language sample is representative of a child’s language skills in terms of language form, content and use. It further provided much-needed preliminary developmental data for Afrikaans.
Perspectives
Although this study provided some answers regarding the length of language samples, it raised new questions about the use of language sample analysis in multilingual contexts.
