What is it about?
This is a commentary on an article written called “A Viewpoint on Accent Services: Framing and Terminology Matter.” In that article, Dr. Grover and co-authors suggested that “Accent modification” should be changed to “Accent Expansion.” We argue that changing the name does not make accent modification less discriminatory. It simply hides the problems. We propose a different, more critical approach. As a field, we need to stop focusing on changing people’s accents. Instead, we should put our efforts into fighting discrimination of speakers.
