What is it about?
Some speech language pathologists use neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to treat swallowing and feeding disorders in infants. A review of the muscle development literature and publications describing the usefulness of NMES in the treatment of swallowing function indicates that this form of treatment should be avoided until more research is completed.
