What is it about?

We demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of using a novel technique to assess and interpret speech variability in adults who do and do not stutter. We also examine the impact of social-cognitive stress (i.e., presence of an audience) on variability.

Why is it important?

This work provides new interpretations of variability in adults who stutter, demonstrating that their speech production systems are inflexible or rigid which is presumably a strategy to maintain fluent speech under adverse conditions.
