What is it about?

Do Speech-Language Pathology students and Specialists always have positive attitudes toward stuttering? We summarized past research and found that SLP students and Specialists share similar negative attitudes, particularly in non-Western countries. Two groups consistently agree that people who stutter are nervous, and the attitudes toward the clinics appear to be more negative in Western countries.

Why is it important?

We have found that Speech-Language Pathology students and Specialists have similarly negative attitudes toward people who stutter. This suggests that future de-stigmatization campaigns should also target these two groups.

Perspectives

This may challenge what some people believe to be an overwhelmingly positive attitude towards stuttering among professionals. I was surprised by some of the differences between the results in Western and non-Western countries.
