What is it about?
Language and literacy are linked at all levels. In particular, there are specific links between levels of language, speech, and spelling. This article provides the reader with information relating to these and a linguistic approach to spelling intervention that draws on metacognitive principles of practice.

Why is it important?
Difficulties in spelling are more common than in reading and yet the former has received less attention in the literature. Given that a child's ability to access a curriculum is measured, in part, by their ability to express their thoughts and ideas in the written form and a key factor in this is their ability to spell. Spelling is therefore fundamental to expression of thought for learners. Speech and Language Therapists and Teachers may hold the view that spelling is within the domain of the specialist, however, it is important to highlight that both have a role to play in supporting those who struggle to master spelling.
