What is it about?
As planes (A) of densely packed balls can be stacked in two ways (B and C), the different sequences of such planes in crystals do not differ markedly in energy. This is why, especially in nanocrystals, the stacking sequences may depart from periodicity and form local twins also in 3 dimensions as cross-twinning. The practice shows that it happens often but is not realized. We offer diffraction tool to monitor this phenomenon.

Why is it important?
Using the proposed methods one can monitor evolution of the internal domain structure of face centered cubic nanocrystals, that can be affecting optical, magnetic, catalytic etc. properties, and be a hidden, not realized factor.
