What is it about?

The synthesis and applications of fluorescent cyclodextrins (FCDs) containing the molecular fluorophores that cause the fluorescence of Carbon Nano Dots (CNDs), obtained by copyrolysis of citric acid and amines, are described. CDFs behave as competitive "off-on" supramolecular sensors in which p-nitrophenol is used as quencher to "turn off" the fluorescence. These compounds have been implemented as a non-enzymatic biosensor of cholesterol and as a sensor of β -galactosidase activity

Why is it important?

We have deconstructed CND–CD systems to demonstrate that (i) the role of CNDs is limited to acting as a support for the molecular fluorophores produced during their synthesis and (ii) the mole- cular fluorophores suffice for the determination of the enzymatic activity based on the quenching by p-nitrophenol as a sacrificial quencher

Perspectives

The fluorescent cyclodextrins allow their easy implementation as “turn off–on” biosensors suitable for the analysis of cholesterol and β-galactosidase activity
