What is it about?

The development of disease treatments as well as the improvement of the methods already used has being the subject of many studies for long time. Furthermore the evolution of current diseases as well as the appearance of new ones will be always a focus on research. The high drug adsorption capacity as well as the slow and gradual release reported for the system developed during this work adds the synthetic smectite fluorohectorite as a promising drug delivery material .

Why is it important?

Controlled drug release systems have considerable l advantages over conventional dosage forms. Besides manipulating the release rate, drug encapsulation offers, among others, protection against drug hydrolysis, chemical degradation as well as decrease in drug toxicity. It is in this context that the current study focused on intercalation and release of a widely used antibiotic in the synthetic clay fluorohectorite.

Perspectives

Our results bring new advances to drug carrier encapsulation by adding the synthetic smectite Fluorohectorite as another promising material for such applications.
