What is it about?

This work deals with the AC electrical response of the interface between melanin layers on nanotextured silicon obtained by plasma treatment . As a results, the final melanin geometry does not follow that one of a thin film but one new one similar to a columnar growth.

Why is it important?

Melanin is patterned in a micro-nanometer dimension; this work is relevant since we study the transport in melanin not in a 3d but in 1d since columnar growth is promoted on the texture substrate

Perspectives

This may constitute a) an interesting interface in enhancing the optical absorption of light from nanostructured silicon aided furthermore by the high optical absorption of melanin; this let to forsee application in optical devices b) since melanin follows the nanotexture silicon profile, melanin may be used as a sensing element with improved sensitivity due to the higher surface to volume ratio of its structure.
