What is it about?

In cystic fibrosis the lungs and intestine are clogged by microbes which are producing a gel-polymer. Administration of biodegradable pills containing a degrading gel enzyme (alginate lyase) and ciprofloxacin will improve the anticmirobial activity of the antibiotic and will reduce the side effects of the antibiotic in the patients.

Why is it important?

We are not able to cure cystic fibrosis now, but we can improve the life quality and span of patients by increasing the treatment efficiency: the antibiotic effect in the treatment in directly associated to the ability of the molecule to reach the target: microbes that are infecting and clogging intestines and lungs forming a gel. An enzyme release form the pills (made by microspheres) will help to destroy the gel and increase the antibiotic diffusion to kill the bacteria.
