What is it about?
It is about the reaction of a version of Lawesson's reagent known as NpP2S4 where the two phosphorus atoms are held close together in space with a difunctional compound. In this question the difunction group is a 1,2-dihydroxybenzene.

Why is it important?
It is important as Lawesson's reagent and similar compounds are able to react with oxygen containing compounds. The oxygen atoms tend to attack the phosphorus atoms. It is important as the reaction of NpP2S4 with methanol and also ethylene glycol have been considered in other papers.
