What is it about?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is usually associated with modern medical diagnostics, but it is also a useful and unique toolkit for scientific research. In this study, we developed and utilized an MRI-based approach to visualize the temperature field in a catalyst pellet during an ongoing model catalytic reaction. The detailed quantitative information on catalyst temperature is hardly possible to obtain with any other technique in a non-invasive and spatially resolved fashion, but at the same time it is key to making modern catalysis less expensive yet cleaner and more efficient.
