What is it about?

We established a correlation between the energetically favored crystalline motifs and dominant short-range ordering in the liquid and glass with similar chemical compositions.

Why is it important?

I. Our finding gives strong evidence that the local packing in the crystal and liquid/glass states follows a similar rule which is essentially searching for the local minima on the potential energy landscape. These local packing can be the key controlling the phase selection at the far-from-equilibrium state. II. It also demonstrates that there are abundant packing motifs (or short-range ordering) in the metallic liquid/glasses instead of the only icosahedron, due to the change of bonding and chemical compositions.

Perspectives

I hope this article makes people further understand the connections between the crystal and glass. There should exist many similar behaviors between this two states.
