Why is it important?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) has been described as an important public health problem by National Institutes of Health Consensus Panel,1 which identified an urgent need for population-based data concerning the prevalence, determinants, and consequences of this disorder. Despite recent advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of penile erection and treatments of ED, few population- based estimates of the incidence of ED are available.

Perspectives

It is very important for physicians to be aware of the frequency of ED in the general population. Male sexual dysfunction is unique because not only is it a nonlife-threatening disorder, but it is also bounded by cultural, religious, and legal issues. The epidemiological study of male sexual dysfunction is even more complex.
