What is it about?

Rapidly growing cities create pressures for the communities and people that live close to them. We demonstrate why at a global level these areas are often neglected, but also important to understand.

Why is it important?

This is important for two main reasons, 1) there areas that are today the edge of the city, will in future be part of the city, 2) much of the disruption caused by fast-growing cities can be anticipated and 3) the areas affected add up to a significant proportion of the global population, so sorting these challenges goes a long wat to sorting the challenges at a global level.

Perspectives

We are a multidisciplinary team from the UK and India. We really enjoyed working together to better understand the sanitation transition but found this was just one example of the wider issues of the periurban zone.
