What is it about?
Quantification of left ventricular (LV) structure and function plays an important role in evaluation of cardiovascular disease. Traditionally, simple measurements of the left ventricle such as LV mass and LV volume are reported from cardiac imaging and a more global representation of the heart shape is not available. We constructed two statistical shape models of left ventricle which represent global LV morphology. The regression analyses revealed that the principal components derived from these shape models have stronger associations with cardiovascular risk factors than conventional measurements such as LV mass or LV volume.

Why is it important?
This is the first paper to compare and contrast two statistical shape models (constructed using different techniques) and shows that they have robust relationships with cardiovascular risk factors.
